The Making of a Colouring Page – Wood Mouse & Bobbit

First I sketch out a very rough drawing of any ideas I have, some times I'll draw one picture sometimes a few.

Next I draw the main part of the picture in my sketch book with a blue pencil.

Then I scan the blue pencil drawing into photoshop, change the colour to grey scale & print it out. Then I draw more details over the printout with a black biro.

In this stage I very carefully trace the biro drawing onto thin layout paper with special permanent fine liners - I like to use either Uni-pin or Sakura. While I'm drawing the ink version I will add extra details like hedgehog spines, wood grain & leaf veins & maybe a few extra characters.

When the inking is finished I scan the final ink drawing into Adobe Photoshop at 400dpi. Then I clean up any mistakes or shaky lines I may have made. I also add little extra details that are easier to do digitally - like the straight lines for the floorboards or some extra little flowers. Finally I add any writing & sign it.

Last stage, I print out the finished picture on to lovely smooth, white card & then colour it in with Promarker pens.
